Workshop #1

어쿠스틱 테리로리
Acoustic Territories

Ten participants, including sound artists, musicians, visual artists, filmmakers, and landscape designers, will come together under the theme of 'Into the (re)wild' to explore the sound of the ecology within Sihwa Lake. We will delve into the interplay of pollution and life, artificiality, and nature, as we investigate the re-wilding process in this part of Sihwa Lake.

Location ︎ Online, and at Daesong Wetland (within Sihwa Lake) in Daebu-Do, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-Do, South Korea
Time ︎ 2023.07.21 (online), 2023.07.23 14:00-18:00 (offline at Sihwa Lake)

The Sihwa Lake is an artificial reservoir completed in 1994, to supply fresh water to the surrounding farmlands and industrial areas. However, after its completion, the water quality rapidly deteriorated due to the inflow of domestic sewage from the nearby expanding city and industrial facilities. Despite its name, which translates to '(si)finally-(hwa)bright lake,' it gained the unfortunate reputation of being known as the 'Lake of Death.'

In 2000, the government abandoned the idea of maintaining Sihwa Lake as a reservoir and instead opted to discharge polluted water into the ocean. Simultaneously, they established a tidal power plant that utilises the tidal difference to generate hydroelectric power. Over the past two decades, the ecosystem of Sihwa Lake has adapted to this artificial ebb and flow rhythm.

This time, the Acoustic Territories field trip takes place at the Dae-song Wetland, which provides the opportunity to observe the ecosystem within the tidal area of the artificial Sihwa Lake. This area is currently off-limits to the public and serves as a habitat for migratory birds and terrestrial wildlife. Unlike the polluted waters of Sihwa Lake, this wetland has quickly recovered its vitality.

Ten participants, including sound artists, musicians, visual artists, filmmakers, and landscape designers, will come together under the theme of 'Into the (re)wild' to explore the sound of the ecology within Sihwa Lake. Workshop #2

갯벌 위의 기계
Machines on Wetlands

Various machines exist in Daebu Island, from the tidal power plant and heavy duty land fillers to weather stations and art installations. The workshop starts with a discussion on machines that function in symbiosis with the mudflat ecosystem. Afterwards, we enter the making session, together building a a sensor station that can occasionally float, and log climate data of the wetland.

Location ︎ Gyeonggi Creation Centre, Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-Do, South Korea
Time ︎ 2023.07.27 13:00-17:00

The workshop was held for participants who live in Daebu Island near the mudflats, esepcially those work in the field of ecology.

1. 'Discussion' 1 hour 30 minutes:

We introduce 'Getbol Lab', an artist collective and residency that observes the tidal flats and surrounding industrial facilities in the Daebudo/Sihwa Lake, carrying out artistic research for the month of July 2023. And as a main discussion, we brainstorm on listing various machines installed (or can be installed) on the tidal flats. Participants and artists will exchange their personal experiences and wishes for the machines that exist and function in the neighbourhood, in close relation to the tidal landscape.

2. 'Making Together' 2 hours:

Artist Sunjoo Lee creates machines and electronic devices  with an ecological perspective in the process or outcome. Led by Sunjoo, this making session is getting acquainted with technologies that can be realized in our hands by making a small machine together. We create a device that collect various data by functioning on the tidal flat. Through the making, we think about the conditions of the 'machine that harmonizes with the tidal flat' and share opinions on the meaning of collecting data with self made machines. At the end of the session, we will go out to the nearby mudflat and install the machine, test it, and de-install it to close off the workshop.
