Dr. Koo pursued his studies at the Department of Oceanography at Pusan National University and obtained both his Master's and Doctoral degrees from the Department of Oceanography at Seoul National University. In 1997, he joined the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, where he currently holds the position of senior researcher and professor at the University of Science & Technology.

구본주 박사는 1967년에 창원에서 태어나 부산대학교 해양과학과에서 공부한 후, 서울대학교 해양학과에서 석사 및 박사 학위를 받았다. 1997년, 한국해양과학기술원(구 한국해양연구소)에 입사하여 현재는 책임연구원으로 재직 중이며, 과학기술연합대학원대학교 해양학과 교수로도 활동하고 있다. 지난 30여 년 동안 갯벌 생태를 연구했으며, 저서로는 『갯벌생물의 집, 서식굴』, 『시화호 생태계』, 『갯벌, 인공지능과 드론으로 연구하다』 등이 있다.
